Trio de Chats Noirs is a dynamic and versatile ensemble featuring Rachel Velvikis (horn) and Mark Fry (bass trombone and euphonium). The trio's programs showcase a wide-ranging repertoire, from the classical masterworks of J.S. Bach and Johannes Brahms to the works of Alec Wilder and Ennio Morricone. Known for their artistry and innovation, they also present creative transcriptions that breathe new life into traditional and modern compositions.

Collaborating with world-class pianists and organists, including the acclaimed Liang-yu Wang, the trio delivers performances that captivate audiences with their depth and variety.

Rachel and Mark are both members of 3rd Coast Brass, Chicago’s premier symphonic brass and percussion ensemble.

Rachel Velvikis - Horn

In-demand hornist Rachel Velvikis has a professional career spanning almost three decades. She was the core horn member of the acclaimed all-female brass group, Seraph Brass, from 2016-2024. Seraph performs all over the globe and tours extensively year-round. They won the 2019 Global Music Award, were winners of the American Prize in Chamber Music in 2020, and released their album, Asteria, via Summit Records. Their newest album, Showcase, was released in February 2025 and is now available on all streaming platforms.

Mark Fry - Bass Trombone & Euphonium

Mark Fry has been one of the leading freelance musicians in Chicago for over two decades. He is currently the bass trombonist for 3rd Coast Brass, the Elgin Symphony Orchestra, and Trio de Chats Noirs. From 2018 to 2024, he served as the acting bass trombonist of the Lyric Opera of Chicago.

He recently recorded an album of solo and chamber works for the bass trombone, all premier recordings, entitled Flaming Angel.
